From The Archives: Max Roach
During the month of February, as we observe Black History Month, we’re taking the opportunity to dig into the KUT archives and bring you some of the incredible voices that have joined us over the past 50 years on our airwaves.
Our second recording in this series is from a conversation our own jazz expert Jay Trachtenberg had around the time of Max Roach’s 63rd birthday. Roach talks about his amazing career and shares stories about playing with Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie along with many other jazz greats. We particularly enjoyed the sweet story Roach tells about rehearsing in Los Angeles in Eric Dolphy’s parent’s garage.
This intimate conversation with the legendary Max Roach will give you a rare opportunity to explore the history of jazz through the first hand experiences of one of the most influential drummers in history. Enjoy!
